This piece utilized a limited palette of processes in Max/MSP to highlight minute changes in vocalization. A pitchtracker analyzed the overtones in various phonemes and in phonation with differing positions of the larynx and soft palate. Frequency modulation based on the outputs of pitch analysis was used to synthesize sounds that are distant from, yet related to, the vocal sounds. By working within a strict range of small yet extreme contrasts, I aimed to create a monochromatic soundscape that evokes the tensions between self-expression and self-control, freedom and moderation, deep inner feelings and the intellect. "Restraint" was accepted for inclusion in the 8th Annual International Women’s Electroacoustic Listening Room Project (WEALR09) as part of the Annual New Music Festival at Cal State Fullerton, March 21, 2009.
