Sarakti Jaaye Hai ruKh se naqaab… was popularized by Jagjit Singh. In 1982 Lakshmikant / Pyarelal team used this same ghazal for film “Deedar-E-Yaar” and employed Kishore Kumar & Lata ji for Rishi Kapoor and Tina Munim on the screen. My personal favorite of course is the Jagjit Singh version.

Jagjit Singh’s ghazals back in the early 70’s was my introduction to the genre and his ever so popular ghazal from the old days is my inspiration here. I realize my version here is not a carbon copy of the maestro’s version but my love for music and desire to pay my tribute compelled me to attempt. Hopefully my amateur music loving friends will overlook my faults and appreciate the maestro even more after listening to my pale performance.

Jagjit Singh, born Jagmohan Singh Dhiman in Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner State now known as Rajasthan (8 February 1941 – 10 October 2011), was an iconic Indian Ghazal singer, composer and musician. Known as the "Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife, another renowned Indian ghazal singer Chitra Singh in the 1970s and 1980s. He was equally versatile in classical, folk songs and devotional genres. He was awarded the “Padma Bhushan” by the government of India in 2003. In February 2014, Government of India released a set of two postal stamps in his honor.

Jagjit Singh is credited for the revival and popularity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by choosing poetry that was relevant to the masses and composing them in a way that laid more emphasis on the meaning of words and melody evoked by them. In terms of Indian Classical music, his style of composing and Gayaki (singing) is considered as Bol-pradhan, one that lays emphasis on words.

He suffered several sad setbacks in his personal life, especially towards the later years with the loss of his and Chitra Singh’s both children. Other little tidbit about Jagjit Singh is his passion for horses, racing horses… he owned 7!!

Ameer Minai or Amir Meenai was a 19th-century Indian poet. He was respected by several contemporary poets including Ghalib, Daagh Dehalvi and Muhammad Iqbal. He wrote in Urdu, Persian and Arabic.
